Hydrangeas in Dubai: Colours, Care and Why They Wilt

A single stem can read as a whole bouquet — generous, thirsty and a little dramatic. Their colours and the science behind them, plus the trick to reviving a wilted head.

Hydrangeas in Dubai: Colours, Care and Why They Wilt

Few flowers fill a space like a hydrangea — a single stem can read as a whole bouquet. They are also thirsty and a little dramatic, especially in the heat. Here is how to enjoy them, and how to bring them back when they droop.

One flower, a hundred florets

A hydrangea head is a rounded cluster of many small florets — the familiar "mophead" — with delicate lacecap types as a lighter alternative. That sheer scale is what makes hydrangeas so generous in an arrangement.

Colours — and the science behind them

Hydrangeas come in white, pink, blue, purple and green. In garden hydrangeas, the bloom colour can shift with the soil: more acidic soil tends to push them toward blue, more alkaline soil toward pink — one of the few flowers whose colour you can influence as it grows.

Why hydrangeas wilt — and how to revive them

Hydrangeas drink heavily and can droop quickly, especially in heat. The trick most people don't know: they absorb water through their petals as well as their stems. To revive a wilted head, re-cut the stem and submerge the whole flower head in cool water for twenty to thirty minutes, then return it to a clean vase. More care tips in our guide on making cut flowers last longer.

Caring for hydrangeas in Dubai's heat

Keep them in plenty of clean water, re-cut the stems often, mist the heads, and keep them cool and away from the air-conditioning stream and direct sun. Of the popular cut flowers, hydrangeas are among the thirstiest, so hydration is everything. (See which flowers hold up in Dubai's heat.)

What hydrangeas pair with

Hydrangeas are lush on their own and pair beautifully with roses and peonies for a full, romantic look. They are a favourite for weddings and larger arrangements — see our note on wedding and event flowers.

What hydrangeas mean

Hydrangeas are traditionally associated with heartfelt emotion, gratitude and abundance, though the exact meaning varies across cultures.
