No — the resemblance is a coincidence. Botanically it is Eustoma grandiflorum, a prairie gentian from the southern United States and northern Mexico, with no connection to roses at all.

So ask for the doubles if the rose look is what you are after; the single-petalled forms are more open, closer to a bell. One stem is a small branching spray: an open flower or two, buds already showing colour, and a few hard green pips at the tip. The coloured buds open over the following days; the green pips never do, so pinch them off. In clean water the stem itself runs ten days to two weeks.
